If you ever wanted to travel to Australia but were turned off by the fact that the trip there and back would eat up your entire vacation allotment, then gear up for the supersonic jet that will get you from New York to Sydney in just five hours.

The SonicStar aircraft was unveiled at the Paris Air Show by European aeronautics company HyperMach. The sleek and somewhat dangerously pointy-looking plane will be twice as fast as the Concorde, traveling at a speed of Mach 3.5 (by comparison, most commercial planes travel at less than Mach 1).

If that doesn’t make much sense to you, don’t worry. The only numbers you need to concern yourself with are those on your wristwatch, because this plane will have you whizzing between NYC and Paris in 1 hour 45 minutes. That’s barely enough time for a movie and meal. Heck, it’s shorter than some people’s daily commute!

The plane certainly opens up a world of possibilities when it comes to weekend getaways – no longer will it only be the Brits who can pop across the Channel for some pain au chocolat and shopping.

Alas, that dream will have to wait. HyperMach won’t have the jets up and running until at least 2021. Sad face indeed.
