You know how some long-term travelers fantasize about moving overseas and setting up their own hostel/hotel/B & B one day (having stayed in so many and knowing what the perfect one should be like)? Well, I never had that fantasy. Instead, for me, it was wanting to set up a bar/club that replicated the coolest one I’ve ever been too: Rio Scenarium.

Of course, it’s something that’s never going to happen (hence the term fantasy) and anyway, maybe part of the allure of this particular club is that you have to go all the way to Rio de Janiero to experience it.

Why do I find Rio Scenarium so special? Well let’s start with the décor: mismatched vintage seating, antique lighting, and just about anything you can name are mounted on the walls, including clocks galore, bicycles and prams (yes, baby strollers). The chairs hanging upside down from the ceiling have a curious Alice in Wonderland effect when you first walk in, but after downing one of the club’s super strong drinks, you won’t know up from down anyway. Add to all this some awesome live samba music and Brazilian munchies and it’s clear this is not your run of the mill bar. That’s probably why so many locals come here as well as all the in-the-loop gringos (aka foreigners).

Unfortunately, none of the photos, or even this virtual tour, truly captures the vibe of this place – you sort of have to imagine the smell of the caprihinas, the energetic jazz band, and all the people swinging to the beat. But if you’re in Brazil and looking for a good night out, trust me, you won’t want to miss this. Oh, and please, if any of you do end up recreating this bar after visiting – let me know!

Rio Scenarium is at Rua do Lavradio 20 in the Lapa district of Rio de Janiero, Brazil.
